I started painting in college as part of the Interior
Design program curriculum. I enjoyed putting color to canvas so
much that I continued to paint. When I had the opportunity to
paint part time, I jumped at the chance. Now I have the pleasure
of painting full-time.
Capturing a moment in time through color, pattern and texture
is an emotive process for me. Representing the essence of a place,
a feeling, an idea into a specific representation of color is
my goal.
I use watercolor to achieve this because of its’ organic
qualities. It’s also incredibly versatile – I can
create nearly opaque passages of color to transparent washes layered
on top of each other; I can use print-making techniques to place
objects into the wet paint that leave ‘fossils’ behind;
and the variety of texture devices available in watercolor are
limited only by ones imagination.
Statement
Capturing a moment in time through color, pattern
and texture is an emotive process for me. Representing the essence
of a place, a feeling, an idea into a specific representation
of color is my goal. Spontaneity is a key element in this –
my work is an experiment in controlled chaos.
Color is my passion – vibrant, juicy, exuberant color that
leaps at the viewer. I want the viewer to feel wonderfully alive
as they explore one of my paintings; to feel a connection with
the universe and their place in it.
I use watercolor to achieve this because of its’ organic
qualities. Watercolor in wet into wet applications becomes a dance
as colors merge and flow across the page. It’s also incredibly
versatile – I can create nearly opaque passages of color
to transparent washes layered on top of each other; I can use
print-making techniques to place objects into the wet paint that
leave ‘fossils’ behind; and the variety of texture
devices available in watercolor are limited only by ones imagination.
Beyond watercolor I enjoy collage and the total immersion into
a world of tactile color in pastel landscapes. Working in pastels
ensures my drawing skills are put into practice through expressionistic
landscapes. While watercolor is my first love, working in collage
and pastel helps keep my watercolors fresh.
